Advertising Sales Manager
About The Role
Digital Matters reaches practitioners and operators who make real buying decisions about AI
tooling, infrastructure, and security. That audience is valuable, and right now we are barely
monetizing it. You would be the first dedicated commercial hire, which means you are not
inheriting a territory or a quota someone else invented.
The inventory already exists: display placements, newsletter sponsorships, a paid directory,
and a sponsored-review program. There is a published rate card. What is missing is someone who
will pick up the phone, build the pipeline, and tell us honestly which parts of the offering
buyers actually want.
Worth saying plainly: we are a small, independent publication, not a network
with a household name. You will be selling on audience quality and topical authority, not on
brand recognition. If that sounds like a fun problem, keep reading.
What You Would Own
- Build and run the sales pipeline end to end: prospecting, outreach, pitch, negotiation, close.
- Sell the full stack of inventory: display, newsletter placements, directory listings, and
sponsored product reviews. - Own the relationship after the sale. Renewals matter more to us than one-off logos.
- Report back on what the market actually pays for, and help reshape the rate card accordingly.
- Keep the commercial and editorial sides properly separated, and route every creative asset
through the standard ad-materials process.
What You Bring
- Two or more years selling something with a real sales cycle. Media or B2B SaaS experience is
a plus, but not a filter. - Comfort with self-directed prospecting. Nobody here will hand you a lead list on day one.
- The ability to speak credibly to a marketing lead at a technology vendor without pretending
to be an engineer. - Straightforward written communication. Most first contact happens over email.
- A track record you can describe concretely, including a deal that went sideways and why.
Nice To Have
- Existing relationships with B2B technology marketers or their agencies.
- Experience selling newsletter or podcast sponsorships specifically.
- Familiarity with programmatic basics, so you can tell us when direct sales is the wrong tool.
Compensation And Terms
This is a commission-based role with uncapped earnings and tiered rates that
rise as you deliver. We will walk you through the exact structure on the first call, before you
invest any real time in us.
Being straight about it: your income here is tied to what you sell. That suits someone who wants
upside and hates a ceiling, and it does not suit someone who needs a guaranteed monthly number.
The role starts as a contract and converts to full-time on hitting agreed revenue milestones.
Remote, US-based, with flexible hours around client call times.
How We Hire
- Apply using the form below. You hear back within seven days either way.
- A 30-minute call about your pipeline approach and what you would sell first.
- A working session: walk us through how you would pitch three named prospects.
Paid, and scheduled at your convenience. - Offer, usually within two weeks of first contact.
Digital Matters hires on evidence of ability. We do not run take-home projects longer than two
hours without paying for them, and we do not ask for references until we are ready to make an offer.
Apply For This Role
Six fields. The cover letter is optional and we mean it: a strong resume and a LinkedIn profile are enough to get a real read. Every applicant hears back within seven days.
