Advertising Sales Manager
Own the revenue side of a growing tech publication. You will sell sponsorships, newsletter placements, and directory listings against a published rate card, and you will have real say in how we package inventory.
Digital Matters is a small, independent publication covering AI, IT infrastructure, web design, marketing, SEO, and security for the people who actually build and run things. We are hiring a handful of roles to push that further. No committees, no ceremony, and no pretending a tiny operation is a media empire.
An honest pitch. We are early and the team is small. The upside is that your work is visible the week you do it.
Nothing sits in a queue for a quarter. You write it, we edit it, it publishes, and you can see exactly how it performed.
We are distributed and deliberately light on meetings. Deadlines are real; your calendar is yours.
We settle rate and scope in the first conversation, before anyone invests real time. We do not ask what you currently earn, and we do not negotiate against your last salary.
Advertising never touches editorial. Sponsors do not review copy before publication, and every commercial relationship is disclosed on the page.
Each posting carries the full description and a short application form at the bottom.

Run the editorial calendar across six verticals and ship two well-reported pieces a week. Hands-on editing, remote and async, roughly twenty hours.
Write explainers and analysis for practitioners in AI, infrastructure, web, marketing, SEO, or security. We pay per piece, we pay on time, and we do not ask for spec work.
Run Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky, actually talk to the people who show up there, and grow The Digital Matters Brief. Contract, remote, around fifteen hours a week.
Test tools and hardware properly and write verdicts we can stand behind. Independent, fully disclosed, freelance per review. Reviewers keep the hardware.
Six fields and a resume. The cover letter is optional and we genuinely mean optional.
Every applicant hears back within seven days, yes or no. No silent rejections.
Thirty minutes about the work. For editorial roles we talk through two pitches you would run with.
A small, scoped, paid piece of real work. We never ask for free samples.
For editorial roles we care that you can explain a technical subject clearly to someone who has to make a decision about it. Practitioner experience often beats a journalism background. For ad sales we care that you have sold something before, and that you can talk about a deal you lost and why.
Most start as contract. Each posting states which it is, and we confirm it before the first call.
Because the right number depends on scope, depth, and how much of a role you take on, and we would rather agree it with you than post a figure that fits nobody. We name a number in the first conversation, before you spend real time on us. Nothing here is unpaid.
We are remote-first. Freelance and contract roles are open anywhere we can pay you legally. The sales role is US-based because of client call times.
Yes, and several of our contributors started exactly that way. See Write for Us for what a good pitch looks like.
If you do something we clearly need and have not thought to post, tell us. A short note, a link to your work, and what you would want to own.
