ChatGPT Visual Ads Will Appear During Image Generation: What Marketers Can Test and Measure

ChatGPT visual ads are coming to image generation. OpenAI said on October 5, 2026 that it will test a new visual ad format in the US later in October, with an initial group of advertisers. The ads show while ChatGPT makes an image for Free and Go users.

The same announcement added measurement tools: conversion data integrations, ten attribution partners, geo-based lift testing, and brand-safety pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science (IAS). This post covers who sees the ads, what advertisers can measure, what the brand-safety pilots do and do not cover yet, and how this compares with ads in Google, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. It is written for agencies and for nonprofit and association marketing teams. Facts are as of October 7, 2026.

The short version: the visual format is a closed US test, so most teams cannot buy it yet. The measurement stack is real but built mostly for e-commerce and app installs. Brand-safety verification is still a pilot. Your organic visibility in ChatGPT answers does not change, because OpenAI says ads do not influence answers. For most nonprofits and associations, this is a watch item for now.

What OpenAI announced about ChatGPT visual ads

OpenAI’s October 5 announcement describes a visual format built around product images. The images can show product inspiration, the product in use, or the experiences it makes possible.

OpenAI says: "Initially, we’ll test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT for users on the Free and Go plans." It adds: "Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created."

The post does not say exactly where the ad sits on screen. Press reports fill in some detail. According to Android Headlines, the sponsored banner appears below the progress bar while the image is being made. According to gHacks, OpenAI’s example screenshots show a grocery brand’s product images with a "Learn more" button while an image request is processed.

The test is US only, and it starts with a select group of advertisers. According to gHacks, OpenAI has not said when ChatGPT visual ads will expand beyond image generation or the US.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT, and who does not

OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT help article sets the audience for all ChatGPT ads, not just the new format:

ChatGPT plan Sees ads? Source
Free Yes, may see ads OpenAI help center
Go Yes, may see ads OpenAI help center
Plus and Pro No OpenAI help center
Business, Enterprise and Edu No OpenAI help center

The help article also says OpenAI does not show ads to accounts it identifies as belonging to people under 18. Ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics, and the article names personal health, mental health and politics. Users can turn off ad personalization in their settings.

This matters for targeting. People on a paid plan, or in an employer’s Business or Enterprise workspace, will not see ChatGPT visual ads. That likely includes many association members who use ChatGPT at work, and university staff on an Edu plan.

How advertisers get in

ChatGPT Ads is self-serve. The ChatGPT Ads site says that after you sign up, you go into Ads Manager to create an account and campaigns. OpenAI’s announcement says businesses can sign up today. We covered that buying interface in our September post on ChatGPT Ads.

Signing up does not get you into ChatGPT visual ads. That test runs with an initial group of advertisers. If a client wants in, ask your OpenAI ads contact, if you have one.

Associations should read the ChatGPT ad policies before planning anything. They say: "Ads that advocate for or against political actors, elections, public policy, or contested social issues are currently disallowed." Advocacy and issue campaigns are out. The policies, updated September 10, 2026, do not have a section on charitable fundraising or donation asks. We found no OpenAI statement either way, so ask before you build a fundraising campaign around it.

What you can measure with ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI’s ads blog post, More ways to measure ChatGPT Ads, lists four layers.

Pixel and conversions API. These track actions such as purchases, leads, installs and sign-ups. Advertisers can use those signals to optimize campaigns.

Conversion data integrations. Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp can send conversion data from existing systems to ChatGPT Ads.

Attribution partners. AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin. The announcement also names Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL as full-funnel measurement partners.

Lift testing. OpenAI is working with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on geo-based experiments to estimate the causal impact of ChatGPT Ads.

A geo test compares regions that saw the ads with regions that did not. It asks whether those conversions would have happened anyway. Our introduction to A/B testing covers the same logic at a smaller scale.

Who the measurement stack is built for

Look at the partner list and a pattern shows. Most of the attribution names are mobile app measurement tools or e-commerce analytics tools. Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp assume you already run a customer data platform or warehouse.

The case studies point the same way. According to OpenAI’s measurement post, WorkMagic’s geo-lift study estimated 2.3 times more incremental orders for the wellness brand Dose than last-click attribution captured. DoubleVerify’s October 5 release says WeightWatchers measured a cost per acquisition 15.3% below its own benchmark, using DV Rockerbox. These are vendor-selected results from consumer brands. Treat them as directional.

For a mid-size nonprofit or association, the stack that fits is smaller. A pixel or conversions API on your join, register or donate pages gets you conversion counts. A geo test is only useful if you have enough volume across regions to see a difference. Many small teams will not.

Before any test, settle what counts as a conversion. A membership join, a conference registration and a course purchase are clean events. Awareness for a cause is not, and nothing in this stack measures it directly. Our post on measuring AI visibility covers the organic side of that problem.

Brand-safety pilots: what DoubleVerify and IAS cover

Image generation is a hard context for brand safety. Users can ask for almost anything, and ChatGPT visual ads show while that image is being made.

OpenAI says DoubleVerify and IAS will run brand suitability pilots that evaluate its standards in a controlled testing environment "without accessing private user conversations." Both companies confirmed this on October 5.

IAS says its brand safety and suitability measurement for ChatGPT Ads "is currently in a closed pilot with a select group of advertisers, with plans for wider availability to follow." DoubleVerify describes its suitability evaluation as a pilot it is developing with OpenAI. Separately, DoubleVerify launched attribution for ChatGPT Ads through DV Rockerbox.

Not available to most advertisers yet. As of October 7, 2026, both brand-safety integrations are pilots. Neither company has said when general availability starts, and neither release describes reports specific to the image-generation placement.

Questions worth asking your OpenAI contact before a test:

  • Which image requests are excluded from showing ads, beyond the sensitive topics in the help center?
  • Will reports separate the image-generation placement from ads in regular answers?
  • What will an advertiser see about the context where an ad ran, given that conversations are not shared?

What ChatGPT visual ads mean for organic visibility

OpenAI’s help center is direct on this point: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers." It says ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses. The October 5 post repeats that advertising does not influence answers.

On privacy, the help center says: "We do not share your conversations with ChatGPT with advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers." Advertisers get aggregated, non-identifying performance data, such as total views or clicks.

So paying for ads does not buy a mention in an answer. When someone asks ChatGPT which association offers a certain credential, the answer still depends on what ChatGPT can find and trust about you. That work is the same as before: clear program pages, current fees and dates, and plain answers to common questions. Our explainer on answer engine optimization covers it, and our post on how ChatGPT cites licensed publishers shows which sources tend to get cited.

ChatGPT visual ads do add one thing: image generation is now a paid surface. If your audience uses ChatGPT to make event graphics or classroom visuals, a competitor’s product could show up in that moment.

How ChatGPT compares with ads in other AI assistants

ChatGPT is not the first AI assistant with ads. Here is where the main ones stand, from each company’s own pages where possible.

Assistant Where ads appear Advertiser control and reporting
ChatGPT Labeled ads kept visually separate from answers; visual ads during image generation (US test, Free and Go users) Self-serve Ads Manager; pixel, conversions API and third-party attribution; brand safety in pilot
Google AI Overviews Above, below and inside AI Overviews; inside placement in 12 countries in English No opt-out; reported as Top Ads with no separate AI Overviews segment
Google AI Mode Two formats in testing, labeled “Sponsored” No eligibility rules published
Microsoft Copilot Ads built from existing campaign assets Eligible campaigns opted in automatically, no opt-out, no Copilot-specific metrics
Perplexity None, per reports Ads program ended, according to the Financial Times

Google’s AI Overviews help page says: "No, you can’t opt out of serving ads in AI Overviews." Its May 20, 2026 Marketing Live post describes the two AI Mode formats as tests. Microsoft’s ads in Copilot page says: "Advertisers cannot opt out of serving ads, and there’s no guarantee that their ads will be displayed in Copilot."

Perplexity launched sponsored follow-up questions in the US in November 2024, per its own blog post. In February 2026, Campaign and TechSpot reported, citing the Financial Times, that Perplexity had walked away from ads. We did not find a Perplexity statement confirming that.

Google and Microsoft place ads from campaigns you already run. ChatGPT is a separate buy, with its own account, budget and measurement setup.

Should agencies and nonprofits test ChatGPT visual ads?

For most nonprofits and associations, not yet. The ChatGPT visual ads test is closed, US only, and shaped around product images. Issue advocacy is not allowed, and fundraising rules are unclear.

A test makes more sense for clients that sell something with a picture: conference travel packages, branded merchandise, course bundles, or a university’s continuing education programs. Even then, wait until you can get placement-level reporting and brand-safety coverage in writing.

For agencies, the useful work now is groundwork. Set up conversion tracking that would work for any new channel. Check whether clients’ audiences skew toward Free and Go users or toward paid and workplace plans. And keep the organic work going, since ads do not touch answers.
