ChatGPT Slides is OpenAI’s new deck editor inside ChatGPT, and it began rolling out on October 16, 2026. It is for Pro, Business and Enterprise users who have access to Space. Teammates can edit the same deck at once, then export it to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides.
Slides is the second document type in ChatGPT Space, after Pages. OpenAI first promised it at DevDay on September 29. This piece covers what Slides does, who gets it, how sharing and export work, where a nonprofit communications or development team might use it, and the limits OpenAI lists. Facts are as of October 19, 2026.
The short version: ChatGPT Slides is useful for first drafts of board updates, donor decks and event slides, especially when the source material already sits in ChatGPT. The live deck stays in Space, and an export is a copy. Check three things before staff rely on it: which plan they are on, whether their Windows PCs can run collaborative Slides, and how your brand template survives export.
What ChatGPT Slides does
OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes for October 16 say: "ChatGPT Slides lets you create presentations and keep working on them with your team in Space."
You can start a deck from a conversation, from uploaded files or from an outline. You can also share an example deck so ChatGPT matches its style and layout. Images can be generated or uploaded.
Once a deck exists, you edit it two ways:
- Directly. Text, images, shapes, tables and charts can be changed by hand.
- By asking ChatGPT. Select an element, choose “Request edits” and describe the change. Or use the prompt bar for changes across the whole deck.
OpenAI’s help article, Creating and collaborating on slides in ChatGPT, gives examples such as shortening a slide or updating a chart from new data. You can also present straight from ChatGPT, without exporting.
How to start a deck
There are two starting points, according to the help article.
- Ask in Work. Open Work and describe the topic, audience and content. You can attach files or build on an existing conversation. The result opens in Space as an editable deck.
- Start in Space. Choose Create, then Slide. Start from a blank slide or a template.
Templates can be built with a tool OpenAI calls template-creator. A team can share them by adding them to the team’s Plugins. That is the route for keeping an organization’s colors, fonts and layouts consistent across staff.
Fonts work differently by platform. On the web, the font picker shows fonts your browser has. In the desktop app, ChatGPT can use fonts installed on your computer. If your brand font is installed locally but not served on the web, decks built in the browser may not match.
Who gets ChatGPT Slides
The release notes say Slides is rolling out to eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users with Space access, on the web and in the desktop app. The help article adds: "Slides is rolling out to eligible accounts." Some eligible users will wait.
| Plan | Slides | Price, per OpenAI’s pricing page |
|---|---|---|
| Free, Go, Plus | Not listed | $0, $8 and $20 a month |
| Pro | Rolling out | From $100 a month |
| Business | Rolling out | $20 per user per month billed annually (2+ users), $25 billed monthly |
| Enterprise | Rolling out | Through sales |
There is no separate charge for Slides on any page we read. It comes with the seat. Prices are from OpenAI’s pricing page, read October 19.
Two gaps carry over from Space. OpenAI’s Space help article says Space is "coming soon" for Business and Enterprise workspaces with data residency in Canada or the UAE. Mobile can find, read and share pages, but not edit them. We covered both in our ChatGPT Space explainer.
For associations, the plan line matters. Pro is a personal plan. Business and Enterprise are workspaces your organization controls. Our post on the ChatGPT Business premium seat covers what each Business seat includes.
The Windows catch
This is the limit most likely to hit a small office. The help article says that on Windows devices without the required MXC component, the desktop app creates and edits PowerPoint (.pptx) files instead of collaborative Slides.
OpenAI says Windows 10 does not support that component. On Windows 11, users may need an update, or the organization may need to enable it. OpenAI does not explain what MXC stands for.
The fix OpenAI gives is to use cloud mode or ChatGPT on the web. The deck still gets made on an unsupported PC. What staff lose is the shared copy that several people edit at once. If your team still runs Windows 10, tell them to use the browser for Slides.
How sharing works in ChatGPT Slides
ChatGPT Slides uses the same access settings as Space and Pages. OpenAI’s Space admin guide says: "Slides uses the same access setting as Space and pages."
- Two roles only. A deck can be shared with view or edit access. OpenAI’s collaboration guide says that for slides “a separate comment-only role isn’t available.” Pages do have a comment role.
- Editors comment. People with edit access can work at the same time and discuss changes in shared comments. They can @mention teammates, and @mention ChatGPT to have it make a change.
- Access is inherited. Access to a shared Space covers what is in it. Removing a direct invitation does not remove access someone inherits from a parent page or Space.
- Turning sharing off is not a reset. The admin guide says disabling sharing blocks new shares and permission changes, “but existing shared access remains.”
The missing comment role matters for review workflows. A board chair or executive director who should only comment has to get edit rights or view only. For a reviewer who should not touch the slides, share as view and collect feedback another way, or export a PDF.
How export works
Export happens from the deck. The help article lists three web options:
| Format | Where | OpenAI’s stated use |
|---|---|---|
| PowerPoint (.pptx) | Web | Keep editing as a PowerPoint file |
| Web | Viewing copies | |
| Google Slides | Web | Continue in Google Slides |
| Open in PowerPoint or Keynote | Desktop app | If the app is installed; macOS can show the file in Finder |
An export is a copy. Edits made in PowerPoint or Google Slides afterward do not flow back into ChatGPT. Pick one place as the working copy, or two people will edit two versions.
At DevDay, OpenAI’s recap said decks export "with formatting intact." The help article is more careful. It tells users to open the exported file and "check its content and formatting before using it." Test that with your own template before you promise a board packet built this way.
What a nonprofit comms or development team might use it for
Most of these are first drafts that a person then checks and finishes.
- Board and committee updates. Turn a program report or a dashboard export into a six-slide update. The help article’s own sample prompt asks for a six-slide project update from notes.
- Donor and sponsor decks. Draft a case-for-support deck from an approved case statement or grant narrative, then have the development director edit it in place.
- Event and annual meeting slides. Build session title slides and sponsor thank-you slides from a run of show.
- Staff training. Convert a how-to page in Space into a short training deck.
- Refreshing charts. Ask ChatGPT to update a chart from new figures, then check every number against the source.
Two cautions apply to development work. Donor names, gift amounts and member records do not belong on a personal Pro account. Use a Business or Enterprise workspace your organization controls. And OpenAI asks users to review text, figures and layout before presenting. That matters most when the figures are fundraising totals.
If your decks follow brand rules, our older guide on using PowerPoint effectively still holds for structure and layout, whatever tool drafts the slides.
How it compares with Claude, Gemini and Copilot
OpenAI is not alone here. Each major platform now drafts decks, but they differ on where the live file lives.
| Tool | Where the live deck lives | Export or format |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Slides | ChatGPT Space | PowerPoint, PDF, Google Slides |
| Claude Slides | Claude | PowerPoint or PDF, per Anthropic |
| Gemini in Google Slides | Google Drive | Native Google Slides file |
| Copilot in PowerPoint | OneDrive or SharePoint | Native PowerPoint file |
Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Slides in beta on paid plans on September 16. Its announcement says you can "download as PowerPoint or PDF." Anthropic does not list Google Slides export. See our explainer, What Are Claude Docs and Slides?, and for Claude inside the Office apps, how Claude works inside Microsoft Office.
Google’s Workspace Updates blog said on June 30 that Gemini in Google Slides can build a full, editable deck from one prompt and use an existing deck as a style reference. Microsoft’s support page says Copilot in PowerPoint builds from your organization’s template and Word files. Both keep the file inside the suite you already manage. Nonprofits weighing Copilot can see our post on nonprofit Copilot discounts.
Limits to know before you roll ChatGPT Slides out
Other gaps from OpenAI’s own pages:
- No comment-only role at launch.
- No numeric limits published. The help article gives no cap on slides, file size or collaborators.
- Retention is general. The admin guide says saved Library files follow workspace retention, and deleted pages and Spaces go to Trash. It does not say how decks are treated.
- Compliance API coverage is unclear. The guide says Compliance API permissions cover “eligible saved Library files.” It does not say whether decks are eligible.
- Docs disagree. As of October 19, OpenAI’s Space help article still lists Slides as “coming soon,” while the release notes say it is rolling out.
ChatGPT Slides also sits next to OpenAI’s Office add-ins. We covered the Word add-in in ChatGPT for Word turning on by default. Slides is a different product: it keeps the deck in ChatGPT until you export it.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did ChatGPT Slides launch?
OpenAI’s release notes date it October 16, 2026. It is rolling out in stages, so some eligible accounts may not see it yet.
Which ChatGPT plans include Slides?
Pro, Business and Enterprise, for users with Space access. Free, Go and Plus are not listed. There is no separate charge on any OpenAI page we read.
Can I export ChatGPT Slides to PowerPoint or Google Slides?
Yes. On the web you can export to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. In the desktop app you can open the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote if it is installed.
Do changes in the exported file sync back to ChatGPT?
No page we read says they do. Treat an export as a copy. The live deck stays in ChatGPT Space.
Can more than one person edit a deck at the same time?
Yes. People with edit access can edit at once and use shared comments. They can also @mention ChatGPT to make a change.
Can I share a deck with comment-only access?
Not at launch. Slides supports view and edit only. Pages in Space do have a comment role.
Does ChatGPT Slides work on Windows 10?
Not as a collaborative deck in the desktop app. OpenAI says Windows 10 does not support the required MXC component, so the app makes a .pptx file instead. Use cloud mode or the web.
Can ChatGPT Slides use our brand template?
You can start from a template or share an example deck for style. Teams can share templates through Plugins. Test fonts and layouts after export, since OpenAI asks users to check exported files.
How is it different from Claude Slides or Gemini in Google Slides?
ChatGPT and Claude keep the live deck in their own apps and export copies. Gemini in Google Slides and Copilot in PowerPoint work on files in Google Drive or Microsoft 365.
Is it safe to put donor data in ChatGPT Slides?
Use a Business or Enterprise workspace, not a personal Pro account. Check your workspace’s sharing and retention settings first, and confirm with OpenAI how decks are covered by retention and the Compliance API.
