Blackbaud Lantern and Platform for Good: What Is Available Now, and What Waits Until 2027

A chiaroscuro still life photograph of an old brass lantern glowing on a dark wooden table, its warm light falling across a tall stack of worn cloth-bound ledgers and a small brass inkwell while the rest of the room sits in deep shadow, a visual for Blackbaud Lantern, the fundraising language model Blackbaud plans to add to Raiser's Edge NXT in 2027

Blackbaud Lantern is a language model built for fundraising, and it is not in any Blackbaud product yet. Blackbaud says it will start powering select Raiser’s Edge NXT and Agents for Good features in 2027. Blackbaud announced it at bbcon 2026 in Columbus, Ohio, on September 29, alongside Platform for Good, a new foundation that sits under its existing products.

Blackbaud calls Lantern "the first domain-specific language model purpose-built to optimize fundraising intelligence." It calls Platform for Good "Social Impact’s First-Ever Unified Operating System." Those are Blackbaud’s claims. This post walks through what was announced, what you can use today, what is still a plan, and how Lantern compares to using ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with your own CRM data. It is written for nonprofit IT and fundraising operations staff, and for the agencies that build on Blackbaud.

The short version: nothing changes for customers today. Blackbaud says Platform for Good "does not require any action from existing customers." Some agents and features are live or in early adopter programs now. Lantern itself is a 2027 item, with no price, no feature list and no published detail on how customer data is used. Ask your rep those questions before you plan around it.

If Blackbaud publishes new dates or pricing after this post, those take priority over what follows.

What Blackbaud Lantern is, according to Blackbaud

Blackbaud’s Lantern announcement describes a model that understands the fundraising cycle. That means how donor relationships start, grow and turn into gifts. Blackbaud says general models miss retention, upgrade paths and long-term donor relationships.

Here is how Blackbaud says it was built:

  • Base models. Lantern uses open-weight models running on the Databricks Data + AI Platform. Blackbaud calls this a strategic collaboration with Databricks.
  • Post-training. Blackbaud says Lantern is post-trained on synthetic scenarios modeled on its Social Impact Signal Graph, which it says reflect real fundraising patterns.
  • Experience. Blackbaud says Lantern draws on more than four decades of fundraising work and data.
  • Customer input. Boston University, Hesed House and YMCA of the North gave input during development.

Blackbaud CEO Mike Gianoni put the pitch this way: "frontier models learn from the internet, while Lantern learns from philanthropy." Carrie Cobb, Blackbaud’s chief data and AI officer, said: "The sector doesn’t need more AI. It needs AI designed to support social impact."

The page does not name the open-weight models. It does not give benchmarks. It does not say whether real customer records are used in training, beyond the synthetic scenarios. It says development follows Blackbaud’s Responsible AI principles, with privacy, transparency and governance at the core, and links to that policy. If you want a refresher on how a specialized model differs from a general one, our post on what a frontier model is covers the terms.

Platform for Good: three layers under the products you already use

Blackbaud’s Platform for Good announcement describes three layers:

  • Data Core. The Blackbaud Philanthropic Dataset, Blackbaud Institute research and industry datasets, and Blackbaud Giving Search.
  • Intelligence Layer. Built on what Blackbaud calls its proprietary Social Impact Signal Graph. Lantern sits here.
  • Action Layer. AI assistants, agents and workflows, which Blackbaud says run with human oversight.

Blackbaud describes Platform for Good as built beneath the products organizations already use. You do not migrate to it. You keep using Raiser’s Edge NXT, Financial Edge NXT or Luminate Online, and new features show up as they ship.

For agencies, the useful reading is that Platform for Good is an architecture and a brand. It is not a new product with its own login or API that we could find. Blackbaud did not publish developer documentation for it alongside the announcement.

What is available now and what comes later

Blackbaud’s full bbcon 2026 roundup, published October 6, gives the clearest status for each item. Where Blackbaud gave no date, the table says so.

Item Product Status, per Blackbaud
Lantern Raiser’s Edge NXT, Agents for Good Select features starting in 2027; broader rollout planned, no date
Development Agent Raiser’s Edge NXT Generally available; early adopter program for Enterprise Fundraising CRM in early 2027
Data Health Agent Raiser’s Edge NXT Early adopter program for US customers, open through end of 2026
Strategy Assistant Raiser’s Edge NXT Announced; no date given
Blackbaud Marketing Raiser’s Edge NXT Early access program
Next-generation Luminate Online Luminate Online Early adopter program; no general availability date
New TeamRaiser experience TeamRaiser All customers by end of 2026, at no additional cost
Accounts Payable Agent Financial Edge NXT Described as a vision; no date
Payment Assistant with BILL, Deposit Connect Financial Edge NXT Announced; no date given
Blackbaud AI Chat Enterprise Fundraising CRM “Later this year”; agent features begin in 2027

Two things stand out. First, Financial Edge NXT and Luminate Online are not named as Lantern products. Blackbaud Lantern’s first stop is Raiser’s Edge NXT and Agents for Good. Second, the finance agents are early. Blackbaud says it is only "exploring" a Reconciliation Agent, a Close Agent and a CFO Ready Agent.

Blackbaud says its Product Update Briefings run November 17 to 19. That is the next scheduled place for product detail.

Blackbaud Lantern is a 2027 item. As of October 2026, Blackbaud has not published pricing, packaging, a feature list or a general availability date for Lantern. Do not budget or promise features to staff based on the announcement alone.

Blackbaud Lantern versus ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with your CRM data

Many nonprofits already use a general model with donor data. Staff paste exports into ChatGPT, or connect Claude or Gemini to files. Blackbaud itself announced on August 10 a Microsoft 365 Copilot agent for Raiser’s Edge NXT. It pulls donor data into Copilot Chat, Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel. That release did not say who can get it or what it costs.

So the real choice is not Lantern or nothing. It is closer to these three paths:

Path What you get What to check
General model with exports Works today; strong at writing and summaries Donor data leaves the CRM; plan terms on training and retention
General model connected to the CRM Live data, such as the Copilot agent Permissions, which records it can read, and cost
Blackbaud Lantern inside Raiser’s Edge NXT Fundraising-specific model inside the product, from 2027 Price, features, data use, and how it compares in a test

Blackbaud’s argument is that a model trained around fundraising patterns will do better at things like retention and upgrade predictions. That is plausible, and it is untested in public. General models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are also strong at the writing tasks fundraisers do most: appeals, call notes, and donor summaries.

Our post on where AI agents actually run covers where data goes with each general tool. Our Model Context Protocol explainer covers how general models connect to other systems.

How Salesforce and Microsoft are pitching AI to nonprofits

Blackbaud is not the only CRM or software vendor building AI for nonprofits. Salesforce renamed Nonprofit Cloud to Agentforce Nonprofit in December 2025. Its announcement listed four prebuilt agents: Prospect Research, Participant Management, Volunteer Capacity and Coverage, and Donor Support. The agents were sold as an add-on. We covered Salesforce’s broader Agentforce rules in our Claudeforce post.

Microsoft takes a different route. It sells Microsoft 365 Copilot to nonprofits at discounted rates, and those discounts now stack with Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) promotions through December 31. See our post on nonprofit Copilot discounts. Blackbaud’s own Copilot agent shows the two approaches can overlap in the same office.

What to ask your Blackbaud rep about Blackbaud Lantern

Bring these to your account rep or to the November Product Update Briefings:

  1. Price and packaging. Is Lantern included in current Raiser’s Edge NXT subscriptions, an add-on, or tied to usage?

  2. Which features. Which Raiser’s Edge NXT features get Lantern in 2027, and in which quarter?

  3. Our data. Is our organization’s data used to train or tune Lantern? Can we opt out? Is our data kept separate from other customers?

  4. Where it runs. Lantern runs on Databricks. Where is data processed, and what does the Databricks role mean for our data agreements?

  5. Controls. What can admins turn on or off, by user or by role? Is there an audit log of what the agents did?

  6. Integrations. Will Lantern features be available through the SKY API, or only inside Blackbaud screens?

  7. Early adopter programs. Can we join the Data Health Agent or Luminate Online programs, and what do they commit us to?

  8. Copilot overlap. If we already use the Copilot agent for Raiser’s Edge NXT, how does Lantern change that?

Write down the answers and the date. Vendor plans shift, and a dated note helps when you revisit this next year.

What agencies that integrate with Blackbaud should do now

For most agencies, the work this quarter is small. Keep an inventory of which client sites and tools touch Raiser’s Edge NXT, Luminate Online or Financial Edge NXT. Note which ones already send donor data to a general AI tool.

Watch for developer news. If Lantern or Agents for Good features reach the SKY API, custom integrations may gain new endpoints. If they stay inside Blackbaud’s own screens, your integration work does not change.

Also check what clients expect. Staff who heard "AI that knows fundraising" at bbcon may assume it is live. It is not, outside the agents in the table above. A short note from you can save a confused support ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Blackbaud Lantern?
