ChatGPT Ads Creative Enhancements Turn On October 30: What Changes and How to Opt Out

A cinematic photograph of a brass kaleidoscope resting on a worn wooden table near a window at dusk, throwing scattered patches of colored light across the tabletop, the same few pieces of glass rearranged into many patterns, a visual for ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements that rework an advertiser's existing copy, images and links into new versions

ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements turn on by default for new and existing campaigns on Friday, October 30, 2026. OpenAI can then rewrite headlines and descriptions, resize images, change destination URLs and translate ad text. Those versions can run without your review or approval.

OpenAI emailed self-serve advertisers on October 20. Search Engine Roundtable published the email that day. OpenAI’s help page, Creative enhancements for ChatGPT Ads, gives the same date. This post covers what changes, why it matters for nonprofit, association and agency accounts, and how to opt out. It also covers what to check afterward and who might leave it on. Facts are as of October 27, 2026.

The short version: if your ad copy went through legal, compliance or board review, turn the setting off this week. Do the same if you chose your landing pages on purpose. Opt out before Thursday, October 29, to be safe. Then check every campaign, because campaign settings override the account default. If you leave it on, watch your landing page reports. OpenAI does not offer a preview of every version.

What ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements change

OpenAI’s help page says the feature uses "your existing ad and landing-page content to adapt your message." It can also draw on the conversation or the user’s interests. The page lists four kinds of change.

What can change What OpenAI’s help page says Why it matters to a small account
Headlines and descriptions “We may create new or updated text to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests.” Approved wording, member pricing language or required disclaimers can be reworded.
Language “We may translate your ad text into another language.” Translations your team never checked can run under your name.
Images “Images may be resized to fit the ad format.” Text or logos near the edge of an image may not fit the new size.
Destination URLs “The destination URL may be optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website.” Clicks can land on pages you did not pick, which affects tracking and approved pages.

The page says variations "may be prepared in advance or created in real time based on the conversation." You do not need to approve each version. In its FAQ, OpenAI says the experience "does not provide a preview of every variation."

OpenAI gives a grocery ad as its example. The headline "Fresh groceries delivered" becomes "Groceries for quick weeknight dinners" in a chat about weeknight meals. The page says actual wording may vary.

Why ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements matter for nonprofits and associations

Most of our readers run small accounts with a few campaigns. In those accounts, the copy is often the result of review. A continuing education ad may need exact credit language. A health or financial association may use wording its counsel approved. A fundraising ad may need to match a grant agreement.

Rewritten copy skips that review. The new version may be accurate, and it may perform better. Nobody on your side reads it first.

Destination URLs are the second issue. Many association sites still have old event pages, expired early-bird rates and public member pages. If the system picks one of those, a paid click lands somewhere you did not choose. We covered the same risk with Google’s final URL expansion in our AI Max for Search explainer.

Tracking is the third. OpenAI’s Creating ads for ChatGPT Ads page says you "may add UTM tags to individual creative URLs" in Ads Manager. Neither help page says whether those tags carry over to a changed URL. If they do not, those visits may lose your campaign tags.

Translation is the fourth. ChatGPT Ads now serve in 89 countries, as covered below. A translated ad can reach people in a language your staff may not read. That matters most for bilingual groups that pay for approved translations.

How to opt out of ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements

OpenAI’s help page says you can opt out "before October 30 or change your settings at any time in Ads Manager." It tells you to select "Manage settings." It says existing account and campaign opt-outs "are preserved." It also says "Campaign-specific settings take priority over your account default."

OpenAI gives no full click path. The screen details below come from PPC Land and Search Engine Roundtable; we did not sign in to confirm them.

  1. Sign in to Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, or use the "Manage settings" link in OpenAI’s email.
  2. Open the ad account settings. Search Engine Roundtable says the setting is at ads.openai.com/settings. PPC Land says it is a card titled "Creative enhancement," set to On by default.
  3. Turn it off at the account level. This sets the default for your campaigns.
  4. Check each campaign. Campaign settings win over the account default. A campaign set to On stays on.
  5. Note the change and the date in the client file.

According to PPC Land, one switch covers all four kinds of change. It found no way to keep image resizing and turn off rewritten text.

Two questions remain. First, the email reportedly says "self-serve campaigns," while the help page does not. OpenAI’s October 21 expansion post says advertisers can also buy through technology partners. It is not clear whether partner-managed campaigns get the same default. Second, PPC Land reported on October 21 that the help page then said October 29. The page now says October 30, so opting out before October 29 covers both.

Deadline: OpenAI’s help page says creative enhancements turn on automatically on Friday, October 30, 2026. An earlier version reportedly said October 29. Set the account default and check each campaign before Thursday, October 29.

What to check after ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements are on

If you leave the setting on, or miss a campaign, these checks show what ran.

Ads Manager reports. OpenAI’s Measure Results page lists metrics at the campaign, ad group and ad levels. They include impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, cost per click and conversions. You can export daily values as a CSV. Neither page says reports show which enhanced version ran.

OpenAI’s own caveat. The help page says changes over time "do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements." A rise in clicks after October 30 could come from the change, the season or more competition.

Landing pages. In Google Analytics 4 or your own tool, filter paid ChatGPT traffic. List the landing pages. A page that is not in your campaign suggests a changed URL. Check it for old prices, closed registrations or member content.

Tracking parameters. Measure Results says you can add landing page query parameters at the campaign, ad group and ad levels. Macros such as {campaign_id} and {ad_id} fill in at delivery. Set them at the campaign level as a backstop. Then check whether visits from changed URLs still carry them.

Country and language. Ads Manager can break results down by country. Clicks from countries you did not plan for may mean translated text is running.

Bot access. The Creating ads page says landing pages "must not block OpenAI user agents (OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot)" in your server rules. The feature reads landing page content. A blocked page gives it less to work with.

Who might leave ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements on

OpenAI says the goal is "helping to improve performance while reducing work to create multiple versions." Its Creating ads page already recommends "a high volume and diverse set of ads" for each offer. For some accounts, the setting does that work.

It may suit simple offers that need no outside review. An open webinar or a general awareness campaign may fit. It also helps if your site has current prices and no stale pages. Someone should check reports each week.

Leave it off for now if your copy gets compliance review. Do the same if you must control which page a donor or member sees. The same goes for groups that rely on approved translations.

You can test it later on one campaign. OpenAI notes that results over time will not prove the effect. A cleaner test runs two similar campaigns on the same dates, one on and one off.

OpenAI’s help page also says "Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers" in its FAQ. OpenAI made the same claim when it opened self-serve buying, as covered in our post on the ChatGPT Ads buying interface.

ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 countries

On October 21, OpenAI announced it is "expanding ChatGPT Ads to 26 additional countries, extending availability to 89 countries worldwide" in its expansion post. The post says "over 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on ChatGPT" since launch. Ads launched just over eight months earlier, per OpenAI.

The expansion adds 14 more Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. It also adds markets such as Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Advertisers can buy through technology partners or Ads Manager. Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free, per the same post.

More countries make the translation part of ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements more likely to matter. We covered OpenAI’s newest ad format in our post on ChatGPT visual ads in image generation.

Google and Microsoft already have similar defaults

OpenAI is following a pattern. Google’s text customization page says the feature was "formerly known as automatically created assets." It writes extra headlines and descriptions through AI Max. Google’s final URL expansion page says it is "enabled by default when you opt-in to AI Max" for Search. Google also offers URL exclusions and asset previews. Microsoft’s Advertising API reference says auto-generated search ad assets default to on for new API campaigns. See also our post on Google Ads automated promotions and Marketing in the AI Age.
