ChatGPT Space is OpenAI’s new shared workspace, where teammates, ChatGPT and AI agents work on the same documents. OpenAI announced it at DevDay on September 29, 2026, for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Space and its new document type, Pages, are live. Collaborative Slides are due "in the coming weeks."
Many association and nonprofit staff already draft in ChatGPT. Space changes where that work lives and who can see it. This piece covers what Space is, who gets it, what you can create, how sharing and admin controls work, what OpenAI says about data, and how it compares with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Claude.
The short version: Space is a good fit for drafts that do not hold member data. Before staff put member records in it, confirm they are on a Business or Enterprise workspace, not a personal Pro account. Then check who can share pages, what happens to pages when staff leave, and whether your plan lets an admin turn sharing off.
What ChatGPT Space is
OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 recap calls Space "A new home for your team to collaborate with AI to get work done." You create a space for a project or team, add files and pages, and invite people.
The help article Getting started with Space in ChatGPT describes it as a home for your pages, uploaded files and other work. Inside a space you can make folders, pages and subpages.
Two details matter for anyone who already uses ChatGPT at work:
- It replaces Library. The help article says: “Space replaces Library for accounts with access to Space.”
- Projects stay. Projects remain separate, for project chats, files and instructions.
We covered the full set of DevDay launches in our OpenAI DevDay 2026 recap.
Who gets ChatGPT Space, and where
OpenAI lists three plans: Pro, Business and Enterprise. The help article says Business and Enterprise workspaces with data residency in Canada or the UAE get access "coming soon." Edu is not listed on any OpenAI page we read.
| Where | What you can do | Status as of October 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Web and desktop app | Create, edit, comment and share pages | Live |
| iOS and Android | Find, read and share pages | Live; editing coming soon |
| Canada and UAE data residency | Business and Enterprise access | Coming soon |
On mobile, the help article is direct: "Mobile does not support editing pages."
For associations, the plan line matters more than it looks. Pro is a personal plan. Business and Enterprise are workspaces an organization controls. The same feature behaves differently on each, as the data section below shows.
What you can create in ChatGPT Space
The main thing you make in ChatGPT Space today is a Page. The DevDay recap says: "Pages are a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration." You can write, research, add charts and images, and build small trackers or interactive tools.
There are three ways to start a page, according to OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes: turn a conversation into a page, start from a template, or write directly in Space. People with edit access can work on the same page at the same time and leave comments. You can ask ChatGPT to revise text or reorganize a space.
Slides and spreadsheets are where the pages disagree. Fortune reported that you can create documents, spreadsheets and slide decks in Space. OpenAI’s help article says: "Slides and Sheets are coming soon." We go with OpenAI.
Spreadsheets and decks that ChatGPT Work produces, or that you upload, can still be stored in Space as files. Collaborative editing of them is what has not shipped.
Collaborative Slides: what is coming
The DevDay recap describes Slides in some detail. You will be able to build slides from a conversation or your own template. Several teammates and agents can edit a deck at once and comment.
Exports matter for most teams. OpenAI says you can "Present in ChatGPT or export to PowerPoint or Google Slides with formatting intact." That claim is untested until Slides ships.
OpenAI gives no date beyond "in the coming weeks." The Space feature page also lists mobile editing and texting a dot as coming soon.
One more mismatch: the feature page describes automations that update a page on a schedule. The help article lists automatic page updates ("Keep updated") as coming soon. Test it in your own account before you plan around it.
How ChatGPT Space relates to ChatGPT Work and dots
ChatGPT Space is where work sits. ChatGPT Work and dots are what produce much of it.
- ChatGPT Work is OpenAI’s work agent. The feature page says it “turns context from your tools and files into finished documents, presentations, and analyses.” Space is where those results can be kept and shared. See our explainer on what ChatGPT Work is.
- Dots are always-on agents. The feature page says: “Dots work natively across files in Space.” You can tag a dot on a page to ask for help. Our post on OpenAI dots covers their permissions.
This matters for data. A dot that can read a space can read what staff put in it. Review dots settings and Space sharing together, not one at a time.
Sharing and permissions in ChatGPT Space
You share a page or a whole space with people or teams. OpenAI’s collaboration guide lists three levels: view, comment and edit. It notes that a team invitation may offer view or edit only.
Access flows downward. Sharing a space covers its pages, and sharing a page also shares its subpages. Files uploaded to a page take on that page’s permissions.
Linked files do not. The guide says: "Check access to linked source material separately." A Google Drive file linked from a page keeps its own permissions.
According to OpenAI’s sharing, data and controls article, sharing a page does not give collaborators your private chats or Memory. But anything written on the page is visible to them, including content ChatGPT drew from your Memory while drafting.
The September 29 release notes for Business and Enterprise add teams. You add colleagues to a team once, then share pages or whole spaces with it. Team membership does not share personal chats or app connections.
Admin controls for ChatGPT Space
The feature page says: "Your workspace’s admin settings and sharing rules still apply." How much control that gives you depends on the plan.
OpenAI’s Enterprise admin guide for Space says admins manage sharing at the workspace and role level. It adds: "Disabling sharing blocks new shares and permission changes, but existing shared access remains." Turning sharing off later does not undo what staff have already shared.
The same guide says saved Library files follow the workspace’s retention policy. Removing a member revokes workspace access at once, and retained Enterprise chats and files follow that policy. The Compliance API handles export and deletion of eligible files, and an Admin role alone does not grant that access.
Business is thinner. OpenAI’s Business data and sharing article does not mention Space. It does say "ChatGPT Business does not provide the Enterprise workspace-wide control for disabling sharing for everyone," and that data export is not available in Business. We could not confirm whether either point covers Space pages.
Pro has no admin. Each person controls their own settings.
What OpenAI says about data
OpenAI’s documented position is short.
- Business and Enterprise: “OpenAI does not train on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise data by default.”
- Personal accounts, including Pro: training follows each person’s own setting. The help article warns: “If you allow your interactions to help improve models, they may include content your agent reads, writes, or contributes to a shared page.”
That second line reaches past private chats. For anyone on a personal account, the training setting also covers what their agent reads or writes on shared pages. The setting lives under Settings, Data controls, "Improve the model for everyone."
The pages we read say nothing Space-specific about encryption, data residency beyond Canada and the UAE, audit logs or retention periods. Ask your OpenAI contact rather than assume.
Fortune’s Google Workspace framing, and the real comparison
Fortune’s September 29 coverage framed Space as possible groundwork for OpenAI to "rival Google Docs or the wider Google Workspace suite of applications." That is Fortune’s reading. OpenAI’s own pages do not say it.
The practical difference is direction. Google and Microsoft add AI to the document tools staff already use. OpenAI and Anthropic add documents to the AI tool.
| Product | Where documents live | Documented admin and data points |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Space | In ChatGPT; Slides and Sheets coming soon | Enterprise can disable sharing; no training on Business or Enterprise data by default |
| Google Workspace with Gemini | Docs, Sheets and Slides in Drive | Existing Workspace protections apply; admins can turn Gemini features on or off |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Pages | SharePoint Embedded, tied to the user’s account | Cloud Policy controls creation; items discoverable in Purview |
| Claude Docs and Slides | In Claude; Docs in beta | Team and Enterprise share within the organization only; Enterprise off by default |

Claude Docs is not available under customer-managed keys, zero data retention or HIPAA setups. We covered the Claude side in the Claude Cowork merger, and Gemini’s Workspace defaults in four September Gemini changes.
What to check before staff put member data in ChatGPT Space
- Which plan each person is on. Staff on personal Pro accounts are outside your admin’s reach, and their training setting is their own.
- Who can share, and with whom. Find out whether your plan lets an admin turn sharing off. On Enterprise, do it before rollout, since existing shares stay.
- What happens when staff leave. Ask where their pages go and what your retention policy keeps. Business has no data export.
- What linked and copied content exposes. Text pasted from a member database onto a page is visible to everyone with page access.
- Memory. Content from a staffer’s Memory can surface on a shared page.
- Dots and connectors. Review what dots and connected apps can read in each space.
- Data residency. Canadian workspaces with residency enabled do not have Space yet.
- Your own data policy. Check it, and any agreements your association has signed, against what OpenAI documents.
Until those answers are in writing, keep member records out and use Space for drafts, plans and internal notes.

Not on Business or Enterprise data by default, according to OpenAI. On personal accounts, including Pro, each person’s own training setting applies, and that can include their contributions to shared pages.
Can an admin turn off sharing in ChatGPT Space?
On Enterprise, admins can manage sharing by workspace and role, but existing shares remain. OpenAI’s Business help says Business lacks the Enterprise workspace-wide sharing control. We could not confirm how that applies to Space.
How is ChatGPT Space different from ChatGPT Projects?
Projects stay separate and still hold project chats, files and instructions. Space replaces Library and holds pages and files you share with others.
Is ChatGPT Space a replacement for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?
Fortune framed it as a possible Google Workspace rival. OpenAI does not say so. Space has pages today, with slides and sheets still coming, and no email or calendar.
