Claude Cowork Merger: What Changed, Who Has It, and What Team Admins Should Check

Illustration for the Claude Cowork merger, in which Anthropic folded Cowork and chat into a single Claude conversation that decides whether a request needs a quick answer or a longer task, rolling out first to Pro and Max plans while Team and Enterprise organizations keep the separate Cowork and chat experience for now.

The Claude Cowork merger folds Anthropic’s task agent and its chat app into one conversation that decides for itself whether a request needs a quick answer or a longer piece of work. Anthropic announced it on September 16, 2026, and the rollout started with Pro and Max plans. Team, Free and Enterprise organizations did not get it on day one.

If you set up Cowork for a nonprofit or association team this summer, the Claude Cowork merger may read like your setup just disappeared. It did not. This piece walks through what Anthropic announced, who has the new experience, what carries over and what moved, what the merged version cannot do yet, and which admin settings a Team owner controls today. It also covers Claude Docs, Claude Slides and Claude Design, which launched inside conversations the same day, and a plan conflict on Anthropic’s own pages about who gets them.

The short version: on a Team plan, nothing changes yet. Anthropic’s Team and Enterprise help article says those organizations keep chat and Cowork as they are today. Use the time to decide your default autonomy setting, list what your staff rely on that the merged version does not support, and check your admin toggles. Once an account has the new experience, it cannot switch back.

One more date matters for Pro and Max accounts. On October 6, 2026, new tasks on those plans run in the cloud, and the "Only on your computer" setting goes away. We cover that change in its own post.

What Anthropic announced on September 16

The announcement on Anthropic’s blog is titled "Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude." Its core claim is one sentence: "Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have."

In practice, the choice between a chat window and a Cowork task goes away. The Claude release notes for September 16 put it the same way: you can "ask a quick question or hand Claude a bigger task, like a report, spreadsheet, or presentation, without choosing a mode first."

Two new artifact types came the same day, Claude Docs and Claude Slides, and Claude Design now works inside ordinary conversations as well as on its own. We cover those below.

When we first explained what Claude Cowork is in July, it was a separate app with its own window and its own task list. The merger ends that separation for the plans that have received it.

Who has the Claude Cowork merger today

Anthropic’s blog says the new experience is "rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, in the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks." It adds that "Team and Free plans will follow soon, and Enterprise admins will hear from us at least 30 days before anything changes for their organizations."

No date is given for Team or Free. As of September 29, 2026, we found no Anthropic page announcing the Claude Cowork merger for Team or Free plans. Check the release notes before acting on this table.

Plan Merged experience (as of Sept. 29) Notice before it arrives
Pro Rolling out now None stated
Max Rolling out now None stated
Team Not yet; “will follow soon” None stated
Free Not yet; “will follow soon” None stated
Enterprise Not yet At least 30 days

The gap matters for small organizations on Team. Enterprise admins get a notice period. Team owners have no stated notice. Plan as if it could arrive any week.

The Cowork product page now carries a banner reading "Claude Cowork is now just Claude," with more plans to follow. It still lists desktop downloads for macOS, Windows, ChromeOS and Linux. Cowork has not been discontinued. It has been merged into Claude for the plans that have the new experience.

What the Claude Cowork merger means for a Team plan set up in July

Anthropic’s Team and Enterprise Cowork help article opens with a note: "Team and Enterprise organizations keep chat and Claude Cowork as they are today, so everything in this article still applies."

That means your July setup still works. Staff still choose between chat and Cowork. Your organization settings, connectors and skills stay where you put them. The guides you followed still describe what Team users see.

There is one exception worth checking. Staff who use a personal Pro or Max account for work may already have the merged experience on that account. That creates two versions of Claude in the same office. Anyone writing internal how-to notes should say which one a step applies to.

If shared channel work is part of your setup, Claude Tag in Slack is a separate product and is not part of this change.

What carries over in the Claude Cowork merger

The blog is direct about continuity: "If you’ve been working in Cowork, everything is where you left it: your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills."

The help article on the merged experience adds files to that list. Previous Cowork tasks stay accessible in their original form. On desktop, the storage folder location is shown in Settings.

Skills you built or recorded carry over too. If your team used Record a Skill to teach Claude a routine task, that skill should be available from any conversation after the switch. For background on how skills work, see our 101 on AI skills.

Existing projects also keep working. Anthropic’s Projects help article says "Existing projects in chat and Cowork keep working as they do today." It also says Pro and Max projects will be upgraded to a redesigned version as that rollout reaches chat and Cowork. That is a separate change with its own timing.

There is no way back. Anthropic’s help article says: “Once your account has the new experience, you can’t switch back to separate ‘Chat’ and ‘Cowork’ options.” Test your team’s key workflows on a Pro or Max account first if you can, so the switch on your Team plan holds no surprises.

Where things moved in the merged experience

Several familiar controls have new homes after the Claude Cowork merger. According to Anthropic’s help article, these are the main moves.

What you used Where it is now
Cowork task list and chat history Together under Recents
Global instructions Settings, then General, as “Instructions for Claude”
Research The /deep-research command, or the + button
Web search toggle Removed; Claude searches when it judges it helpful
Files Shown alongside conversations

The web search change deserves a note for organizations with data rules. There is no per-conversation search toggle in the merged experience. If your staff turned search off for sensitive work, that habit will not carry over. The Team help article lists a web search setting in Organization settings, but it describes today’s chat and Cowork, not the merged version.

The global instructions move matters for anyone who wrote house style rules or a tone guide into Cowork. Check that the text arrived in Settings under General after the switch.

What the merged experience does not do yet

Anthropic’s help article lists five things the Claude Cowork merger does not support yet. Read them against what your team actually does.

  • GitHub: adding files from GitHub is not supported.
  • Conversation branching: not available.
  • Incognito chats: they open in the previous experience and cannot create files or code.
  • Search: it does not include older Cowork tasks.
  • Dispatch: not available to new users.

For a web agency, the GitHub gap is the one most likely to hurt. Teams that pull theme files or documentation from a repository into a Cowork task will lose that route. For a communications team, the search gap matters more. Finding last spring’s grant report task by keyword may stop working until Anthropic extends search.

Anthropic calls these "current" limitations. It gives no dates for fixing them. Re-check the list when the change reaches your plan.

Manual or Auto: decide the default before it arrives

The merged experience has two permission modes. The help article describes them this way:

  • Manual (the default): “Claude asks before it takes actions, and you choose whether to allow each one.”
  • Auto: “Claude keeps working without stopping to ask about each step, and automated safety checks run before it takes an action.”

The mode can be changed at any time and applies to the whole conversation. The blog says the same thing in plainer terms: "By default, Claude asks before taking an action."

For a small nonprofit staff, the default is the safer starting point. Auto is useful for long, low-risk work, such as tidying a spreadsheet. It is a poor fit for anything that sends email, edits a live website or writes to a donor database through a connector.

Today’s Cowork on Team has a related admin setting. The Team help article describes "Allow ‘Automatically approve’ mode" under Organization settings, Cowork, Permissions. It is on by default. When it is off, members do not see that mode. Anthropic has not said whether this setting will govern Auto once the Claude Cowork merger reaches Team. Decide now what you want it to be, and confirm the behavior after the switch.

Claude Docs, Slides and Design inside conversations

The three artifact types launched on September 16 alongside the Claude Cowork merger. Each is described as beta.

Claude Docs is for writing documents with Claude and your team. According to the Claude Docs help article, it exports to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs. Version history is not available yet. On iOS and Android you can view docs but not edit them. Docs count toward your plan’s usage limits.

Docs is not available to organizations using customer-managed encryption keys, zero data retention or a HIPAA-ready configuration. Some health-adjacent nonprofits and associations run under one of those setups. If yours does, Docs is not an option for now.

Claude Slides drafts presentations. The blog says you can edit directly, present from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. We found no standalone Slides help article as of September 29.

Claude Design now works inside a conversation, and the standalone version at claude.ai/design keeps working. The Design help article says its use counts toward the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. When you reach your limit, Design is unavailable until the limit resets. Heavy design work can crowd out everyday requests on the same plan.

Anthropic’s own pages disagree on plan availability

Who can use Docs, Slides and Design depends on which Anthropic page you read. As of September 29, 2026, the pages said three different things.

  • The blog: “All three are in beta on paid plans, and Enterprise admins choose when to turn them on.”
  • The release notes: “Artifacts, including Claude Design, Claude Slides, and Claude Docs, are available on every plan, including Free.”
  • The help articles: Docs and Design list Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Both are on by default for Pro, Max and Team, and off on Enterprise until an owner turns them on. Neither lists Free.

Two of the three, plus Anthropic’s pricing page, point to paid plans only, so we treat Docs, Slides and Design as paid-plan features until Anthropic reconciles the release note. For paid plans, the pages agree closely enough to act on. Team organizations should assume Docs and Design are already on. If you let staff use free personal accounts, test what they actually see rather than relying on any of the three pages.

Admin settings a Team owner controls today

These settings exist now on Team plans, according to Anthropic’s Team and Design admin help articles. All are under Organization settings.

  • Cowork, “Enable for your organization”: turns Cowork on or off for everyone.
  • Cowork, “Run Cowork in the cloud”: on by default for Team, off for Enterprise. Our piece on Cowork cloud sessions explains what this changes.
  • Cowork, Allow “Automatically approve” mode: on by default.
  • Cowork, Allow “Always allow” for connector tools: off by default. It lets members skip per-task approval for connector tools that can write data.
  • Claude Design: the standalone Design toggle, on by default for Team.
  • Artifacts: where Anthropic places the controls for Slides, Docs and Design in conversations.

The Design admin guide says settings for artifacts, templates, design systems and sharing "live in one place now." If you want Docs or Slides off for your organization before the switch, Artifacts is where to look.

A readiness checklist for the Claude Cowork merger

For a Team plan organization, these checks cover most of what will move.

  • Copy your global instructions into a document now, so you can confirm they arrived intact.
  • List connectors and skills your staff use each week. They should carry over, and the list lets you check.
  • Flag GitHub use. Anyone who adds files from GitHub will need another route until Anthropic adds support.
  • Flag Dispatch use. It is unavailable to new users in the merged experience.
  • Pick your autonomy policy. Keep Manual as the staff default, and decide whether “Automatically approve” stays allowed.
  • Review the Artifacts settings for Docs, Slides and Design, especially if you handle sensitive records.
  • Brief staff on the new layout: Recents, Settings under General, and /deep-research.
  • Tell staff there is no switching back once their account moves.

What this means for our earlier Cowork coverage

Our July and August Cowork posts described Cowork as its own app. They remain accurate for Team and Enterprise organizations today. For Pro and Max users who have had the Claude Cowork merger, the navigation they describe is out of date.

That includes our look at Cowork on web and mobile and our comparison of ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork, which predates the merger. The capabilities they describe still exist. What changed is where you find them and the fact that you no longer choose a mode.

The Claude Cowork merger is one of several Claude changes from mid-September. We will cover the redesigned Projects, Docs and Slides, and Design in more depth in coming posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Cowork discontinued?

No. The Claude Cowork merger makes Cowork’s abilities part of every conversation for Pro and Max accounts with the new experience. Team and Enterprise organizations keep chat and Cowork as they are today, according to Anthropic’s help center. The Cowork product page still offers desktop downloads.

Which plans have the merged Claude experience?

As of September 29, 2026, the Claude Cowork merger was rolling out to Pro and Max plans on web, desktop and mobile. Anthropic says Team and Free plans “will follow soon,” without a date. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days’ notice.

Does anything change for a Team plan right now?

Not yet. Anthropic had not announced the Claude Cowork merger for Team plans as of September 29, 2026. Its Team and Enterprise help article says those organizations keep chat and Cowork as they are, and everything in that article still applies. Staff using personal Pro or Max accounts may see the new experience on those accounts.

Will I lose my Cowork projects, skills or connectors?

No, according to Anthropic. The blog says chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills are “where you left it.” The help article adds files, and older Cowork tasks stay accessible in their original form.

Can I switch back to separate Chat and Cowork?

No. Anthropic’s help article says that once an account has the new experience, it cannot switch back to separate Chat and Cowork options.

Where did my global instructions go?

In the merged experience, they are in Settings, under General, labeled “Instructions for Claude.” Check the text after your account switches.

How do I run deep research now?

Type /deep-research, or use the + button in the conversation. Web search no longer has a toggle; Claude searches when it judges it helpful.

Can I still use GitHub in the merged experience?

Not for now. Anthropic lists adding files from GitHub as a current limitation, along with conversation branching, search of older Cowork tasks, incognito file creation and Dispatch for new users.

What is the difference between Manual and Auto?

In Manual, the default, Claude asks before each action and you approve it. In Auto, Claude keeps working without asking, and automated safety checks run before each action. The mode applies to the whole conversation and can be changed at any time.

Are Claude Docs and Slides free?

Most of Anthropic’s pages say paid plans only: the blog, the Docs help article and the pricing page. One release note says every plan, including Free. We treat them as paid-plan features. On paid plans they count toward your usage limits.

Can our organization use Claude Docs under a HIPAA or zero data retention setup?

No. The Docs help article says it is not available to organizations using customer-managed encryption keys, zero data retention or a HIPAA-ready configuration.
