What Is Claude Duet? Anthropic’s Proactive Agent App, and What IT Should Decide First

A gouache painting of a quiet restaurant kitchen pass at dawn, with small bowls of chopped herbs and vegetables prepared in a neat row and one finished plate under a steel cloche waiting beside an unrung brass service bell, a visual for Claude Duet, Anthropic's proactive agent that prepares work on its own and waits for approval before it sends, pays, signs or deletes.

Claude Duet is a new Anthropic app where Claude works as a proactive agent: it checks your connected apps, tells you what needs attention and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. Anthropic launched it on October 21, 2026 as a research preview, according to its announcement. Access is by waitlist, for US Pro and Max subscribers only.

The change is in who starts the conversation. Regular Claude waits for you to open a chat. Claude Duet checks your accounts on its own, sends a morning brief and messages you when a task is done or needs a decision.

Anthropic aims Claude Duet at professionals and small business owners, with named connectors for QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, Docusign and HubSpot. Team and Enterprise plans are not included, so there is no organization admin console in the picture yet. Write a short rule on which accounts staff may connect, and who approves payments and signatures, before anyone signs up.

What Anthropic launched on October 21

Anthropic’s Introducing Claude Duet announcement describes a new app in which Claude works as a proactive agent. The Claude release notes for October 21 list the same research preview for Pro and Max plans.

The announcement says: "A research preview is available by waitlist today, starting with US Pro and Max subscribers." The Claude Duet product page adds that "Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet." Anthropic’s Get started with Claude Duet help article says it plans to bring Duet to those plans later.

For now Claude Duet lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app, according to the announcement. Anthropic’s pages do not mention the Claude desktop app.

How Claude Duet works day to day

You talk to Claude Duet by text or voice in one running thread. Anthropic’s announcement lists three habits.

  • A morning brief. Each morning it sends a short summary of the most important items across your connected apps.
  • Regular check-ins. It checks connected accounts every few hours and messages you when something needs attention. You can tell it what you want to hear about and how often.
  • Background tasks. It has a virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop or phone does not need to stay on. You get a notification when a task finishes or needs review.

The product page FAQ gives examples: flag what needs you in your inbox and calendar, draft replies for approval, find unpaid invoices and draft reminders, prepare payroll for review, get contracts ready to send, and build a brief, deck or dashboard.

Claude Duet compared with chat, Cowork, scheduled tasks and Managed Agents

The product page puts the main difference plainly: "The Claude app waits for you to open a chat," while "Claude Duet comes to you."

Product Who starts the work Where it runs Who it is for
Claude chat (Cowork merged in, rolling out on Pro and Max) You, in a conversation Claude’s cloud, or your computer through the desktop app All Claude plans
Scheduled tasks A prompt you set once, on a timer Cloud, unless the task needs local files or apps Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise
Claude Managed Agents Your own code, through the API Anthropic’s hosted sessions Developers building agents
Claude Duet Claude, checking your accounts Its own cloud virtual machine and browser US Pro and Max users, waitlist

Anthropic’s release notes say the Claude Cowork merger lets any conversation take on bigger tasks without choosing a mode first, rolling out gradually to Pro and Max. Claude scheduled tasks in the cloud repeat a saved prompt on a set schedule, and each run is its own session, per Anthropic’s scheduled tasks help article.

Claude Duet chooses what to bring you and when. The announcement says it is built to "decide what needs you, what can wait, and when to check with you first." Anthropic also says that judgment can still go wrong.

Claude Managed Agents is a developer service on the Claude Platform, with SDKs and an API. Duet borrows its credential design and needs no code. Claude Design and the other artifact types make finished files inside a conversation. The product page says Duet also returns work "like a doc, sheet, or deck for your review," and the help center says finished work appears in Duet’s Make tab.

What data Claude Duet can reach

Claude Duet carries over your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account, Anthropic’s announcement says. Any connector a staff member has already added to their personal Claude account comes along.

The announcement, product page and help center name these apps:

  • Email, chat and files: Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack and Notion
  • Money: Intuit QuickBooks, Stripe, Ramp, Gusto for payroll, and Link and Shop Pay for purchases
  • Contracts and contacts: Docusign, HubSpot and Calendly
  • Marketing and sales: Canva, LinkedIn job posts and Shopify

The product page shows a Microsoft 365 logo. The help article says Microsoft 365 isn’t available in Duet yet, and Slack works with limits. Duet can also use the 6,000-plus connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace, per the announcement. It lists 1Password as coming soon, so Duet can sign in to sites with your saved logins, with your permission. Most connectors use the Model Context Protocol, which we explain in our MCP guide.

For purchases, Duet can use Link, Stripe’s digital wallet, or Shop Pay at online stores. The help article says each purchase uses a one-time card that only works for that purchase, so your real card number is not shared.

How Claude Duet approvals work

The approval model has three layers, based on Anthropic’s announcement.

First, Claude Duet reads, drafts and prepares work on its own. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, "it shows you exactly what it’s about to do and waits for your approval."

Second, Anthropic says "A few things are off-limits even with your approval, like trading securities or moving money between accounts." The help article adds accessing someone else’s account.

Third, the announcement says actions are approved by Anthropic’s auto mode classifier, the safeguard it already uses in Claude and Claude Code. Anthropic does not say exactly which actions that classifier clears without asking you. Treat the four named actions as the ones you will always see.

On credentials, the announcement says Duet follows the design used for Claude Managed Agents, so it never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens. Anthropic’s Managed Agents engineering post describes holding tokens in a vault outside the sandbox where the agent works.

The announcement also describes a separate classifier that checks each message for sensitive data. It is designed to reject the strictest tier, such as credit card numbers and government ID. Health and personal finance details pass only when you tell Duet to send them. You can disconnect any app at any time.

Approval is a click on a phone. A staff member approving a Stripe refund or a Docusign signature from a notification is still the person signing. Your finance and signing rules apply to that click the same way they apply at a desk.

What IT at a small nonprofit or association should decide first

Claude Duet is a personal-plan product. Pro and Max are individual subscriptions, so a staff member can join the waitlist without IT knowing. Decide these points before that happens.

  1. Who may use it on work accounts. If your organization is on a Claude Team plan, Duet is not available there. Staff would need a personal Pro or Max plan. Say whether that is allowed for work data.
  2. Which connectors are allowed. List the work systems staff may connect. A short allowed list (calendar, email) is easier to defend than a blocked list.
  3. Payments. Decide whether Duet may touch QuickBooks, Stripe, Ramp or Gusto at all. If yes, name who can approve and up to what amount.
  4. Signatures. Docusign approval from a phone is still a signature. Match it to your existing signing authority.
  5. Member and donor data. HubSpot and other CRMs hold personal records. Decide whether a personal-plan agent may read them.
  6. Offboarding. A personal account leaves with the person. Add “disconnect Claude Duet” to your exit checklist. The help article says disconnecting stops new access, but Duet keeps memory of past information.

Known limits of the research preview

Anthropic lists its own limits. The product page says Duet "may misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent, and it can miss something that arrives between checking in with you." The announcement says personal errands, such as booking tickets, are weaker, and it cannot yet show you its browser. The help article adds that it can’t see files on your computer and doesn’t call or text other people.

Usage is the other limit. The product page says "Its background checks count toward those limits," and larger tasks such as a financial model or deck use more. The help article says people admitted to the preview get one full limit reset, available until November 30, 2026. Our post on the Claude usage reset covers how those limits behave. Anthropic said on October 21 that it would share more safety details in the coming days.

How Claude Duet compares with other proactive agents

The other frontier platforms have similar products. OpenAI’s dots announcement calls ChatGPT dots always-on agents, each working on its own cloud computer, and we walked through how to set up a ChatGPT dot. xAI’s Grok Bot docs say every Grok Bot on an account uses the same cloud computer. Its approvals page suggests setting Ask first rules for sending, publishing, purchases and deletions. Google Cloud’s Gemini at Work post says its Gemini agent works directly inside Gmail, Drive, Calendar and the other Workspace apps. Claude Duet differs in its small-business finance connectors and its personal-plan-only launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is an Anthropic app where Claude works as a proactive agent. It checks your connected apps, sends a morning brief, takes tasks by message and asks before sensitive actions.

Who can get Claude Duet?

US Pro and Max subscribers who join the waitlist. Anthropic says Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet and plans to add them later.

Does Claude Duet cost extra?

No. Anthropic’s help center says it is included with Pro and Max at no extra cost during the preview. It shares the plan’s usage limits, and its background checks count toward them.

What does Claude Duet ask approval for?

Anthropic says it waits for your approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything. Some actions, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts, are blocked even with approval.

Does Claude Duet use my existing Claude connectors?

Yes. Anthropic says it carries over your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account. Microsoft 365 isn’t available in Duet yet, per the help center.

Is Claude Duet the same as Claude scheduled tasks?

No. A scheduled task runs one saved prompt on a set timer. Claude Duet checks your accounts every few hours and decides what to bring to you.

Can our IT team manage Claude Duet centrally?

Not today. It is only on individual Pro and Max plans, so there is no Team or Enterprise admin console for it. Use a written policy until that changes.

Does Claude Duet work on the desktop app?

Anthropic lists iOS, Android and claude.ai in a browser. It lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app.
